Beta-lactamase provides antibiotic resistance by breaking the antibiotics' structure. These antibiotics all have a common element in their molecular structure: a four-atom ring known as a β-lactam. Through hydrolysis, the lactamase enzyme breaks the β-lactam ring …
15 Oct 2019 Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) are enzymes that confer resistance to most beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins,
Various bacteria produce a class of enzymes called beta-lactamases, which may be mediated by genes on plasmids or chromosomes. Production of beta-lactamase may be constitutive or induced by exposure to antimicrobials. Beta-lactamases hydrolyze (and thereby inactivate) the beta-lactam rings of a variety of susceptible penicillins and cephalosporins. Beta-lactamase enzymes are produced by certain strains of the following bacteria: Bacteroides species, Enterococcus species, Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Staphylococcus species, either constitutively or on exposure to antimicrobials. Beta-lactamase inhibitors are drugs that block the activity of certain beta-lactamases and are thus sometimes combined with beta-lactam antibiotics.

Beta-lactamase definition is - any of various bacterial enzymes that inactivate the penicillins and cephalosporins by hydrolyzing them.
Novel β‐lactamase inhibitors have extended the reach of new and existing β‐lactams against multidrug‐resistant bacteria expressing β‐lactamases. The efficacy of …

2020-04-21 · Beta-lactamases are enzymes (EC 3.5. 2.6) produced by bacteria that provide multi-resistance to β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, cephamycins, and carbapenems (ertapenem), although carbapenems are relatively resistant to beta-lactamase.
The beta-lactamases are widely distributed in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. They all inactivate penicillins and cephalosporins by opening the beta-lactam ring. Many varieties of the enzyme can be distinguished on the basis of their catalytic and molecular properties, but only amino … Beta-lactamase enzymes are produced by certain strains of the following bacteria: Bacteroides species, Enterococcus species, Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Staphylococcus species, either constitutively or on exposure to antimicrobials. BETA-LACTAMASES. Beta-lactamases are enzymes that open the beta-lactam ring, inactivating the antibiotic. The first plasmid-mediated beta-lactamase in gram-negative bacteria was discovered in Greece in the 1960s. It was named TEM after the patient from whom it was isolated (Temoniera) .
